Devotional for Encouragement

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

I was driving by the river after the floods, and it still looked angry.   It seemed to have a distasteful appearance that it had enjoyed the destructive path of days before.   Maybe that was reading too much into it, but I know we live in a fallen world that would like to discourage us and even conquer us.  It is an angry climate, groaning in expectation for redemption.

I’ve noticed a great deal of cleanup happening after the devastation of the flash floods.   Many people are reaching out with helping hands to neighbors and friends.   That is encouraging, especially when it communicates the message that God is the only help and hope.   He alone is our refuge and strength, our ever-present help in trouble.

“There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells” (Psalm 46:4).  Let it rain with His reign as we are reminded of a different river, a river of life flowing from His throne with healing for the nations.
