Banana

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1:2-4)

Eating some fruit one recent morning, I was considering the amazing qualities of a banana. It is a remarkable fruit, isn’t it? The color reveals its readiness to eat, the unique shape fits well in your hand, and the quick pull tab lends easy access to the delicious fruit. Pealing back the layers is like uncovering a tasty mystery.

There is also delicious mystery in how God sometimes reveals fruit through us during tough times. As the layers of our lives are pealed back, what is deep within gets revealed. When we are exposed and vulnerable, I pray that the fruit of the Spirit is on display. When the coverings we trust in and the masks we wear are stripped away, when our inner self is uncovered by trying circumstances, when who we are deep inside is laid out for all to see…..may those around us see love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control (Gal 5:22-24). May that be the fruit which others taste when all our wrappings and masks are removed. In the moments when we are most vulnerable and weak, may our heart be one of authenticity and worship.

As the songwriter put it,
          When the music fades
             And all is stripped away
              And I simply come
           Longing just to bring
              Something that’s of worth
                   That will bless your heart
                            I bring you more than a song…….

“Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Heb 4:13)
