Devotional for Encouragement

“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.  For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."  The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness,  since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.  For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”   (Rom 1:16-20)

We were on the way from Baltimore to Cumberland to visit family, trying to be patient with the late Friday afternoon masses getting out of the city.  We noticed a Best Buy store  just off the freeway and decided to exit and drop in for some electronic shopping.   We could not find the right roads to take us to where we had seen that clearly visible store.  It was complicated, unclear, with too many obstacles.  After an unsuccessful search, we gave up and found our way back to the freeway to join with those on the broad road of congested traffic.    Wouldn’t you know it, we drove by that Best Buy again and could see it right there off the freeway.    Lingering frustrations from the previous experience stopped us from a second try.

I've been reflecting on the truths of Romans 1.    Verse 19 is a statement that God clearly exists,  “For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen….”     As the Psalmist put it “The heavens declare the glory of God;  the skies proclaim the work of his hands”  (Psalm 19:1).   God is right in plain view from the highways of life.   There is plenty of evidence in creation to prove His presence.    However, there is only one path to get to Him, to experience new life in a relationship with Him.   Jesus is the only Way  (John 14:6).    He is THE Best Buy, because He and the abundant life He offers is FREE!

Lord, may my life be a simple testimony  of how to find hope in You.    Help my life to put in plain sight both You and how to get to You.    Help me not to put obstacles or complications in anyone’s path.  Help my witness to be clear and uncomplicated!
