a broken Tree
At some point in its history, this tree was bent and broken at a nearly perfect 90 degree angle.   Maybe a storm did the damage, or perhaps heavy snow, or some person in a delinquent mood.    The bend was marked by a fascinating scar that had healed with swollen remnants of the injury.     Somehow the tree survived, and instead of fatality there was new life.   Just beyond the scar tissue was a new main shoot reaching for the heavens.    Something broken was becoming something  new, with growth and life at eye level.

Sometimes people get broken, spiritually and emotionally wounded and hurt.   What makes the difference between fatality and recovery?

Ps 34:18-22:
‘The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all;
he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken.
Evil will slay the wicked;  the foes of the righteous will be condemned.
The LORD redeems his servants;  no one will be condemned who takes refuge in him.’

God is able to deliver, transforming pain into something beautiful for His purposes.   The scars might remain as reminders, but God wastes no pain.

“For we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.  For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.  And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.” (Rom 8:28-30)

So, He redeems and produces fruit out of our suffering and our wounds, conforming us to the likeness of Jesus the Son.   Like the broken tree, the beauty of new life can be seen more readily at eye level, a more accessible viewpoint for others to experience.   Through brokenness, character is put within the sights of  a world in need of hope.    The abundant life that flows from sharing in HIS sufferings offers a  powerful witness, putting our  history and  HIStory within the reach of other broken people.
