A Diehling Devotional

Kristi and I, with my parents, went on a picnic in a Western Pennsylvania park this summer.    We chose a picnic table right by a huge pond that flourished with wildlife.    We watched a group of geese swimming by, in single file, 56 of them in a perfect line (I was so amazed that I counted).  I’ve never seen that before, that many geese in single file making a unified wake upon the surface of the water.  The U.S. Marines would have been proud.    They were following a leader, unified in a single direction, each improving the path for the one following behind.    It was fun to watch.   We also were impressed that those geese  swam by with such grace, their padded feet obviously moving efficiently below the surface.    All we could see was their smooth and graceful movement along the water.

The whole picture made me dream about the church.   Much happens below the surface, in the secret closets of prayer beyond sight, serving as the propellers for the flow of movement in the body of Christ.    With unified purpose, blazing a trail for those behind us, we follow our leader to a destination of God’s plan.    Like good soldiers of Christ Jesus.

2 Tim 2:2-4:
Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.  No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier .

Joel 2:7-11:
They run like mighty men, they climb the wall like soldiers;  And they each march  in line, Nor do they deviate from their paths.  They do not crowd each other, They march everyone in his path;  When they burst through the defenses,  They do not break ranks.  They rush on the city,  They run on the wall;  They climb into the houses,  They enter through the windows like a thief.   Before them the earth quakes,  The heavens tremble,  The sun and the moon grow dark And the stars lose their brightness.  The LORD  utters His voice before His army;  Surely His camp is very great,  For strong is he who carries out His word.  he day of the LORD is indeed great and very awesome,  And who can endure it?
