“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Gal 5:1) Driving a Budget truck
packed with our stuff along the roads toward the promised land of Pennsylvania,
the worst highway I encountered was the one I had to pay for. The toll
road was in the worst shape, full of potholes and rough pavement.
After awhile I got used to it, but couldn’t help but wonder where all the
money was going that people were paying into the toll booths along the way.
And I was a slave to that highway, because finding an exit from the toll road
can happen only at strategic locations.
My thoughts drifted into remembering when I was on the toll road of life, thinking that being good and doing religious stuff was paying my way to heaven. It was a rough road, and some of the bumps left scars. My good works were not glorifying God, and I’m not sure where the payments went. I’m glad I never got used to that road I was on. I’m thankful I didn’t become enslaved in the pride of my own goodness. When I accepted God’s free gift of eternal life in Jesus, I discovered a new and better way, the way of freedom in Christ. It is a much better road, and one that I don’t have to pay for because Jesus did at the cross. That’s what I’m thinking about during this Advent season. What a wonderful freedom we have, following the One who claimed to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). We’re celebrating his first coming and looking forward to the road ahead where we will see him again! “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Cor 3:17-18) =========
