A Diehling Devotional

Did you see the  interview on 60 minutes  with Tom Brady, quarterback of the Patriots?   At one point he was talking about the 3 super bowl rings that he has been a part of winning.   He noted that even in those great successes, “there has to be more.”   He explained that friends say to him that he has “arrived,” but his voice and tone were clearly an indicator of his discovery that there are more meaningful ladders to climb.   He revealed a searching heart when he explained that there must be more to live for.    The interviewer asked him what that might be and his response was, “I don’t know.”    I hope and pray that those thoughts are an open door for someone to share the hope, purpose, and fulfillment that come with faith in Christ.   Jesus is worth getting up in the morning for……there is a message that many are waiting to hear.

The interview reminded me of sitting next to a retired homicide detective on a recent flight.    It didn’t take long, with a few well placed questions, to get him talking about the struggles of his 30 year career, the emotional drain, the ups and downs, the encounters with scenes the human eyes are not designed to handle, the fear of a sudden explosive situation, and the ease with which one can loose heart.   When I asked him what he was doing to get emotionally refilled these days, it created an open door of reflection.  As the discussion unfolded, he began to see that fishing, being a granddad, and sharing with friends  were great activities but not really working in meeting that deep inner need for refreshment.   We also talked about the victories of catching the “bad guys.”  Yet, he expressed the frustration that no matter how successful a case, there is always more to do and more evil to fight.   Here is another man in need of fresh vision, deep fulfillment, and purpose that can only be found in Christ.    He was beginning to tap into his childhood understanding of God by the time we landed, and I’m praying that He’ll find LIFE that comes by faith in Jesus Christ.

Neither the best of Super Bowl  success  nor  the greatest of  Super Cop cases can begin to compare with the abundant life that Jesus has in mind for us to embrace.

Ps 107:9
"For He has satisfied the thirsty soul,
And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good."

Phil 1:11-12
"... having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God."
