A Diehling Devotional

Ps 98:8
Let the rivers clap their hands,
let the mountains sing together for joy….”

Sitting on the bank of the upper Sacramento River one lazy Sunday Afternoon, Kristi and I shared in some relaxing and playful time, enriched by the beautiful creation around us.    We ate peanuts and threw the shells at each other.  We shared in laughter and reflection.   We dreamed.    There was a rapids in the river nearby….producing beautiful and inspiring background music.   Kristi commented that  she wanted to be that kind of Christian….bringing fresh water into the lives of others and never becoming a stagnant bug-producing pool of unmoving water.

The afternoon was topped off with watching a family of otters playing around in the river.    What neat animals.    They provided a great image of  a family having fun.   They seemed playful with each other.  Curious explorers,  I’ve heard that they rarely stay in one place for very long.   Happy about the direction they were headed, swimming upstream didn’t seem a challenge to them.    Watching them was refreshing.

It occurred to us that following Christ is an upstream, to the source, against the world’s current kind of pursuit.   It is a wonderful adventure that has brought joy, and we are thrilled about the direction of His leading.    We’re also thankful that His creation speaks of His glory.   The otters were a song of joy.    We otter go have some playful fun at the river more often.
