What's Under Your Wallet?
While helping with some remodeling at the church, I took
on the project of painting the new baseboards for the foyer.
We were working outside, being a very nice Montana day.
We put on a nice primer, bright white soaking effectively into the raw wood.
After brushing in 2 coats of brown, I went into the office to
get some other work done.
It rained. The paint on the boards
bubbled up and peeled right off. So, we had to remove the paint
to start over. The nice white primer was permanent, however.
I wanted to get frustrated by the extra work that the rain created, but looked
for a lesson instead. I thought of several:
- It rains in life, a lot. Life’s storms cause the surface
of things to fade and lose their grip. We find out what is really under
the surface when there are trials and tribulations.
- God has very unique ways to strip away what is on the surface
as he cuts to the heart. He may not cause the storms, but no
suffering is wasted in his economy.
- When the layers of my life are stripped away and my heart
is laid bare, when I’m feeling exposed and vulnerable and wet, when the masks
of comfort are stripped away, I want HIS glory to be revealed.
He is the bright white primer that cannot be stripped away.
He is permanent.
- The fact is, all of creation awaits in expectation for the
surface of things to be pealed away and His glory to be revealed in us……….
“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with
the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits in eager
expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was
subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one
who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated
from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children
of God.”
