Our son, Zachary, recently
earned a purple heart.
They were in a transport vehicle after a
mission, returning to their base in Afghanistan,
thirty five marines packed into the back of an open truck designed to
carry twenty. They
had been on the offensive, a very
successful mission, but were ambushed on the home stretch.
Gunfire came out of the darkness.
Have you experienced the reality of spiritual attacks after
times of victory? Have you faced
that
dynamic shift from things going well to getting attacked out of nowhere
on the
home stretch? Have you ever been
blindsided or ambushed by the darkness and evil around us?
Tripped up when you were least expecting
it?
A barrage of semi-automatic rifle fire came from some
terrorists 20 meters off the side of the road (that’s called close
range). Zach was hit with
shrapnel in the face from
the impact of a bullet that hit the gun barrel of the marine next to
him. He described the sound of bullets
hitting the
truck and whizzing by their ears. He has a few scars, but there were no other
injuries, and nobody was directly hit by a bullet.
What are the chances of an enemy shooting from 20 meters away
with repeated fire into a truck packed with soldiers and not having one
bullet
cause a fatality? Were
there unseen shields and deflectors? The
event could have been a terrible tragedy. It
added up to thirty five
close
calls. We
could have lost our son.
I am always encouraged by the Psalms and the numerous
references to God as our shield and protector………
Ps 18:2…….”The LORD
is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in
whom I take refuge. He is my shield
and
the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
I know God protects us, even when we get wounded and hurt.
We may have no clue how bad it could have
been. And no matter how bad it is, God
is still the person to take refuge in.
There was a quick shift to the offensive for that group of
Marines. The enemy bailed out of the
area. We have an offensive
posture also….
Eph 6:15-18……”In
addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can
extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of
the Spirit, which is the word of God. And
pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of
prayers and
requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for
all the
saints.”
Keep praying. We’re
all at war, but the battle with an enemy not easily spotted has been
won.
Col
2:15
“And having disarmed
the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them,
triumphing over
them by the cross .”
One more thing…..God gives out purple hearts too.
Among them is the crown of incorruptibility (1
Cor. 9:25-27), the crown of rejoicing (1 Thess. 2:19),
the crown of life (James 1:12),
the
crown of righteousness (2 Tim 4:8), and the crown of glory (1 Peter
5:4). We
get to give them right back, to the commanding officer and victor………
Rev 4:10-11
They lay their crowns
before the throne and say:
"You are worthy,
our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all
things, and by your will they were created
and have their
being."
