![]() "Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.” (Rev. 22:1) The aftermath of Hurricane
Irene has been devastating. Pictures are
showing valleys flooded, homes
lost, crops swept away, bridges gone, roads ruined, and lives shattered. The cleanup is going to take a long
time. The destructive power of water
flowing in unrestrained currents has left people shocked and dismayed. Contact with dirty, polluted waters has
given people rashes and the potential of disease and sickness is of
real
concern. We are keenly aware that the
pictures represent real people who have been deeply impacted by
devastating
circumstances.
The images also represent a dark reality of wrongdoing, immorality, and wickedness that are like floodwaters of despair. Not everyone lives in a hurricane zone, but we have all been exposed to the pervasive presence of sin and destruction in our world. We have all encountered evil perilous waters that can poison the optimistic and flood away the things people put their hope and trust in. A bad decision by one person can surge into a destructive path. Bad choices are seldom contained in isolation. Genesis chapter three is a hurricane story about a destructive curse unleashed in the created order. God is our refuge and our salvation. The cleansing of His forgiveness moves us from darkness and death to light and life. Because of the death and resurrection of Jesus, there is a better, deeper way of life and a promising future. Because of His finished work on the cross, abundant life is within our reach. Because He lives, we can face the storms and overcome the hurricane of darkness that rails against us. There is a river full of crystal clear waters offering pure, refreshing, life-giving hope. Lord, thank you for rescuing me. Help me to live my life as a “thank you” note to You. Perhaps there is someone I can come alongside today, offering a lifeline of help and hope through the encouragement of Your love. =========
