“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.  Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another — and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”   (Heb 10:24-25)

An acquaintance of mine, Stephen Bly, is a cowboy.   A recent email from him reminded me of how much I enjoy watching rodeo, especially team roping and steer wrestling.    In the latter, two horseback cowboys take off on the trail of a running steer.  Teamwork and good balance combined with strength are critical components.   The hazer attempts to keep the steer running straight and smooth.  The wrestler dives off the back of his galloping horse, grabs the steer by the horns and wrestles it to the ground in a moment of conquering victory.

For me, that’s a meaningful snapshot of life.  Maybe that’s why I like the sport.  Teamwork.  We all need it.  Sometimes we are the wrestler, sometimes the hazer.  In times of struggle, wrestling through the temptations of life and taking down the enemies that war against our souls, we need support, encouragement, and prayer.   We need accountability and support to identify the proper issues and goals to wrestle down.   Who is hazing for you?   Who is helping you stay on the trail, keeping you moving in the right direction, helping you to experience more of God in your life?  Who are you hazing for?

Sometimes our wrestling needs to be in prayer for those who are hazing for us.  As Paul wrote to the Colossians concerning Epaphras, “He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you may stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.” (Col 4:13b)

I’m thankful for those wonderful people God has put in my life to keep me chasing the right things.  I’m thankful that God speaks through them to help me to see where HE is working and where He is leading.  I’m praying prayers of thanksgiving for them today.
