Devotional for Encouragement

Running to God
Acts 2:21
“And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

My brother and I, at age  4 and 6,  were in the basement earning points with mom and dad by cleaning up.  Dad had made some kind of promise that if we cleaned the basement, there would be reward.    I don’t remember what the reward was going to be but I remember it was always fun to see the smile on Dad’s face when he was happy with us.

So, we were busy little guys, trying to push around the big broom and moving “stuff”  to clean behind.   We moved things like a big glass jar that was full of gasoline for the lawnmower.   It slipped out of  my hands, hit the concrete floor, and shattered.
In those days, we had a gas water heater that had an open flame under it.   I didn’t understand the consequences of that, but I had two options in my little mind.   I could try to clean it up and hide the damage or go straight  upstairs and call out to dad.   I ended up calling out to dad.

By the time dad headed down the stairs to check out the situation, the flames chased him back upstairs.   The whole family quickly abandoned ship, ran over to the neighbors,  and called the fire department.    My dad and the firemen saved the day.    Some smoke damage, but we were all ok.  Saved.

I’ve often reflected on the choices of that day.   What if I hadn’t gone upstairs right away to talk with my Father?   I was splattered with gas when the jar broke.    What if I had tried to cover-up the slip and hide my boo boo, even if it wasn’t really my fault?

We were all born covered with gasoline, and this world is full of open flames.  We are soaked in the stain of sin.    The only hope is calling for DAD’s help.   He is the only one who can rescue.  We can’t clean up without his help.

The promise is salvation for those who call upon the name of the Lord.    When entering into a relationship with Jesus Christ, we are given new garments.   Clothed in Christ Jesus.   Fireproof clothes to help rescue others.

Gal 3:26-27
“You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus,  for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”
