SPIN ZONE
The world seems to be spinning out of control. Countries are falling apart at the seams. Earthquakes and storms are causing devastation. And not all of the shaking and spinning is in distant lands. Some of it is close to home. Be it tornadoes and floods or job security and suffering, there are days when the circumstances around us seem like a whirlwind. Many people we know are just trying to keep their heads above water in storms they hope will go away. Much is out of our hands and over our heads, yet God is within our reach in a world full of uncertainties. Even with all the spin and confusion, I believe deeply that God can work things to the good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28). We can embrace a hope and a future in a relationship with Christ. He can weave something beautiful out of our lives, even in the most out-of-control situations spiraling downward around us. Kristi and I recently spent some time with a pastor and his wife in their home, and discovered that the wife spins wool by hand. Watching her demonstrate the skill with which she is able to spin the wheel with her foot and feed raw wool into the machine was intriguing. Twisting the fibers into a thread of yarn makes it possible to knit warm blankets or coats of many colors. We had a great discussion about what it’s like to follow Christ, allowing Him to weave together something beautiful in a world that seems to be spinning around us. On the cross, Jesus wore a garment that was seamless, woven in one piece. They didn’t tear it. Perhaps they couldn’t tear the garment, like the fulfilled prophecy that none of His bones were broken. “When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. ‘Let's not tear it,’ they said to one another. ‘Let's decide by lot who will get it.’" (John 19:23-24) In Christ, through an intimate relationship with Jesus, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Cor 4:8-10). As we clothe ourselves in Christ, God works everything to the good, creating a beautiful garment that will endure the spin of our world, “…..to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Col 1:27).
