....."So David and his men
continued along the road while Shimei was going along the hillside
opposite
him, cursing as he went and throwing stones at him and showering him
with
dirt. The king and all the people with
him arrived at their destination exhausted. And there he refreshed
himself."
(2 Sam 16:13-14)
I’ve learned a leadership
principle that I’m reflecting on
these days. No matter how well
prepared, supported,
and protected you think you are, dirt will be thrown at you.
Right after Zach’s
graduation ceremony from USMC bootcamp,
we headed over to an outdoor eating area.
Sitting with Zach, having a great lunch together, we
talked and shared
some great family time. He was
our leader that day, like the warrior king
David. Spiritual matters were talked about.
The three foundations of USMC ethics training were a part
of the
conversation…..courage, commitment, and honor. Zach
was looking sharp in his perfect uniform. Every inch was pressed, clean,
immaculate, ready to pass
the closest
inspection. There was no spot
or
wrinkle. Until that
nasty bird. Suddenly,
with no rhyme or reason, Zach had bird
poop on his leg. Then a second shot
in the middle of his
hat. What are the chances of that? None of us saw that coming.
From a bird is one thing, but David had it thrown at him
so
intensely that he and his party arrived EXHAUSTED.
Exhausted from the dirt thrown at him, but
I would like to think still full of courage and commitment and giving
honor to
God.
What a great leadership
lesson. Whether stuff falling
from nowhere or dirt
thrown by enemies, getting dropped on can build character.
