A Diehling Devotional

John 4:13-14

“Jesus answered and said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again;   but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life."

Water.   Two Hydrogens and an Oxygen bonded to form a simple but powerful molecule.   Living in a dry climate, I have come to really appreciate H2O.   I’ve also  been reflecting about the images of water in the Bible.  Pure, clean, abundant, refreshing, simple, critical….. water.

While having lunch together, a friend began to take a drink of ice water and accidentally dropped his glass.   The glass shattered when it hit the table, and water went everywhere, including into the lap of his girlfriend next to him.     He hid his embarrassment well and was able to laugh, revealing  much about his joyful character balanced with mature concern.   Seizing the moment, we had a great discussion about living water, and how it is not designed to be held within the confines of a glass.   It is to be shared with others, even if they get wet.

As a hunter and hiker, I have grown to love the feel of cool water in a fresh mountain stream, free flowing and abundant.  Water is meant to be contained only in a temporary way for the purpose of taking it in.   It is not to be poured into a jar and set on a shelf.   Have you ever had a drink of the water you left sitting on your nightstand from the night before?   Water needs to flow in order to stay fresh, moving to places in need of its life giving qualities.    It is to be shared, not contained.

I love simple reminders like shattered containers of significant truths.

Ps 105:41
"He opened the rock and water flowed out;
It ran in the dry places like a river."

Ps 107:36
"He changes a wilderness into a pool of water
And a dry land into springs of water;"

Ps 42:1
"As the deer pants for the water brooks,

So my soul pants for You, O God."

Ps 1:3
"He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season."
