Devotional for Encouragement

“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”   (1 Peter 5:7)

My favorite TV commercial these days is the Geiko Woodchuck commercial where the little creatures are having fun throwing firewood out into the water.   The earthly farmer points his judging finger and scolds the furry animals, “Hey you woodchucks, quit chuckin’ my wood!”   I think God does the opposite, with open,  inviting hands.   Our Heavenly Father encourages us to cast it all into the river of His grace, with cheerful faith.
As I reflect on the close of another year, I’m thankful that we can intentionally pitch some memories and things that need to be forgiven.   Some things just aren’t worth hanging on to.   Too easily I can place problems, issues, concerns, and even sins into the backpack of burdens too heavy to be  carried in my own strength.   Sometimes we can make woodpiles of stuff we think we need to store up for self-indulging fires.   This year I want to be better about casting my cares upon God much more quickly and not get weighed down with unnecessary lumber.   I want to live out more of  Hebrews 12:1, throwing off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles to run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
I like the image of the woodchucks tossing the wood into a river with gleeful fun.    With the close of another year, there are some things that need to be chucked into the living waters of grace at the foot of the cross.   Anything you need to unload?  Have fun with that, because we can do so with unshackled rejoicing…….

“You turned my wailing into dancing, you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.  Lord my God, I will praise you forever.”  (Psalm 30:11-12)
