Devotional for Encouragement

"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you,  leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift."  (Matt 5:23-24)

Our son, Zach, was having trouble with his motorbike a few weeks ago as he prepared for a trip to Baltimore.  The headlight wasn’t working and he was basically shut down.   As it turned out, the problem was a tiny little fuse (an electrical safety device that melts if the current running through it exceeds a particular level, thus breaking the circuit).   Once the fuse was replaced, he was on his way down the road of his planned journey .

Our relationship with God and our relationships with people can be shut down by blown spiritual fuses as well.   Sin can break the connection with God and with others.  Things we say or do, things we fail to do, and even things we think about can break the circuit.  Sometimes even the stuff we perceive to be small can become significant relational inhibitors and we suffer from a break in the flow of communication and love.

I’m so thankful for God’s forgiveness that restores our connections and reconciles relationships.   Prayer can be a fuse change.  Restoring relationships can fuse people into deeper unity.   That moment of “I’m sorry” can have the sound of a brand new fuse popping into place.

Help us, Lord, to be quick to ask for and extend forgiveness.  Help us to keep the communication lines and connections open and flowing with Your empowering grace!
