“For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea.  They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.  They all ate the same spiritual food  and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.” (1 Cor 10:1-4)

What a beautiful picture of God’s provision for our forefathers.   They were provided with manna, heavenly bread, that fell all around them with the dew of night.  They didn’t have to travel far to find God’s supply.  Nor do we.

Last week we took Zachary, our son, out to breakfast after spending the night in Colter and Jordana’s new house (they were gone on a trip).  We climbed into the car, ready for an adventure to find a good place to eat.  We had in mind an IHOP or Denney’s or something, but we ended on a long, scenic drive that produced nothing.  So, we went back to a little diner we had heard about near where we had left the house.  We could have walked.  We ended up eating at a great place only a few blocks from where we had departed.

This was a wonderful lesson for me.  Sometimes I look too hard for answers that God has waiting right under my nose in the profound mystery of His closeness.  Sometimes God allows me to take a scenic detour only to discover what was nearby all along.  Some of life’s greatest spiritual food and the most profound of life’s lessons are closer to home than we might think.   Christ the Rock accompanies us wherever we are.  When we practice His presence we experience His provision and we are close to home.  We don’t need to go far to experience God in the fullness of His supply.

“To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna.”   (Rev 2:17b)
