On a recent missions trip into central Mexico, we hiked up a hill marked by a large cross overlooking the village of Rio Chico.   While sitting to take a break from the steep climb, we noticed a big cactus with a huge seed head that seemed big enough to be classified as a tree.   Looking at other cactus plants of the same variety in the area, we concluded that they must develop the big tree-like seed head and then die.    The death of the seed head enables the casting forth of seeds, meaning multiplication of new life.

We are invited into a life with a similar calling aren’t we?

In John 12, Jesus teaches about his journey to the cross.  “Jesus replied, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.  I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.  The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.  Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.’” (John 12:23-26).

Father, help me to daily deny myself and take up the cross to follow you.   Empower me to die to myself that new life may be multiplied through me, for Your glory.  Amen.
