Driving to Sacramento for the holidays, we encountered a bad snowstorm in Nevada. It started with rain, turning to freezing rain, and then we found ourselves driving on snow covered ice. It was slick. That feeling of loosing traction is nerve wracking. What do you do when you’re loosing traction? Slow down for sure. Hold firmly to the wheel and don’t overcorrect? Pay attention and stay alert? Watch for others who may be in trouble? What do you do when you sense that you’re losing spiritual traction in your journey with our Lord? I’m reflecting on that slippery slope drive in Nevada. Slowing down and remembering the basics of the journey is helpful. Holding firmly by faith to the truth from God’s Word is stabilizing. Being careful not to overcorrect into legalism or isolation is important. Staying alert to circumstances and people around us is significant. What passage of Scripture do you embrace when you feel like you’re losing traction? I’m hiding Psalm 24 in my heart these days: “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it.” That includes time as I think about a new year. That includes the road we travel. That includes the weather, the dangers, the joys, the people we meet….all of it. “For He founded it on the seas and established it on the waters.” So: “Lift up your heads, you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Who is he, this King of glory? The Lord Almighty---He is the King of glory.” Lord, help me be alert, watchful, and thankful in this journey with you. Help me to remember the basics of the faith and stay on track when the road of life is slick. Father, may our lives never settle into frozen passivity causing others to slip. May the warmth of your wellsprings flow with abundant life, offering refreshment to those along the banks of our journey. Make us thirsty for more of you. =========
