  Alone

  Do you ever feel lonely?  I ran across these words this morning, the Psalmist writing about his pain, distress, and loneliness:

  Psalm 102:7
  “I lie awake; I have become like a bird alone on a roof.”

  “Like a bird alone on a roof.”  That seems like an odd comparison. What would be wrong with being a bird alone on a roof?  The view would be great and no one would bother you, out of reach of enemies.  

  Alone times can be good for us, but loneliness can rob us of greater joy. The best part about a fantastic view is sharing it with someone.   The thrill of seeing something remarkable is multiplied when friends are with you in the experience.   The fresh air and elevated view from a rooftop, shooting a hole in one on the golf course, making a 3-point shot on the basketball court, seeing your grandson hit a home run, or sighting the biggest fish in the river are just stories unless there is fellowship in the midst of the memory being built. 
  
  There are times when loneliness feels overwhelming.  There are moments when friendships fade, feathers feel ruffled, prayers seem unanswered, and struggles leave us feeling alone, like nobody understands.  We might lie awake at night carrying burdens that no one else can see. 

  The Psalmist doesn’t hide his pain.  He brings it to Jesus.  And there is a wonderful shift in the Psalm,  from the pits to an elevated perspective, from a flightless rooftop bird to the connection with a flock of God followers…… Psalm 102:12 says, “But you, O LORD, sit enthroned forever!”  And then in verse 21, “So the name of the Lord will be declared in Zion and his praise in Jerusalem when the peoples and the kingdoms assemble to worship the Lord.”   Assembling to worship the Lord!

  If you feel like the lonely bird today, remember that your isolation is not invisible to God.  He knows.  He understands your sleepless nights and silent prayers.  He is the One who watches over every sparrow, and He is watching over you.  And there are other people ready to encourage you and help you worship Him.

  So, be encouraged today!
