Pondering Peace
Dec 10, 2024
----------------------------------
PEACE is our word for this week.
There is something really peaceful about a campfire or a fire in a fireplace. Maybe it’s the undistracted attraction to the warm, dancing flames? Maybe it’s the intriguing way that the leaping firelight reflects off peaceful faces? Maybe it’s because of the connection with people over many years past who sat around similar warming fires, like generations of shepherds watching their sheep by night, or like the disciples with Jesus after his resurrection (John 21:9)?
Maybe it is the feeling of contentment that comes with having such a powerful force contained. I mean a fire within an enclosed place creates a powerful peaceful mood. Uncontrolled fire and fire in the wrong place is dangerous and destructive, not at all peaceful.
A campfire or a fireplace fire invites peaceful, quiet listening to the sound of the fire…but much more. There is mention in the Bible of the pleasing aroma of an offering made to God by fire (Exodus 29:41). Then there is the presence of God in the fire of the cloud by night (Exodus 40:38). Jesus is described as the One baptizing with the Holy Spirit and fire in Luke 3:16-17. Revelation 2:18-19 describes Jesus as the Son of God whose eyes are like blazing fire. There are numerous references about God speaking out of the fire in Deuteronomy 4-5.
That’s what I’m thinking about today, a peaceful fire contained in the hands of God, and pondering peace.
