Rest

You know that rest is something we need, right? Hebrews 4 mentions the word “rest” 9 times. Hebrews 4:10 says, “…for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his.”
Hebrews 4 is really speaking of a spiritual rest of the soul that comes with trust, peace, and communion with God in daily life. We can tap into that every morning, starting the day with God in His Word, and then go to work out of rest.
We also need a rhythm of Sabbath rest. The word Sabbath comes from the Hebrew word Shabbat, which means rest. It is historically a time for spiritual renewal, communal worship, and a break from the regular routines of work. What does that look like?
Driving along Interstate 5, we noticed a big easy chair in the ditch that must have fallen from a truck. As we zipped by, we noticed a cat curled up in the soft pillow seat of the chair. I had to do a double-take to make sure I was seeing correctly----- a cat resting on a lazy chair in a ditch by the side of a road.
That image has stuck with me, the snapshot of an unconcerned cat not at all distracted by the traffic racing by. It is an appropriate Sabbath image. Resting with no stress even in a very noisy world.
I’m not saying that’s easy. My mind so easily jumps back on to the highway when seeking silence and rest in prayer. So many things to be distracted by, so many things to be done, so many things that a person could worry about. But there is always peace and comfort cushioned in God’s presence.
So hey, I hope these words bring some nourishment and rest to your soul this morning.
Psalm 23:1-3
“The Lord is my shepherd;
I have all that I need.
He lets me rest in green meadows;
he leads me beside peaceful streams.
He renews my strength.”
Maybe sometime soon you can even get in a Sabbath cat nap.
